Armitstead brings home the first medal for Team GB

Up until 4pm yesterday all talk in Great Britain was on then men’s road race and the long suffering Mark Cavendish breaking his Olympic curse to get the first medal for Team GB.  However it was not meant to be and instead, as with the Beijing 2008 Olympics, it was down to the women to get Great Britain on the medal table.  So for London 2012 it was Lizzie Armitstead taking to the podium to claim her well deserved silver medal.

In the driving rain Armitstead broke away from the group at the descent at Box Hill with the  eventual winner Marianne Vos and Russia’s Olga Zabelinskaya and after a gruelling sprint finish came in to claim silver.

Beijing 2008 Gold medallist Nicole Cooke came in 31st with fellow Team GB members Emma Pooley and Lucy Martin getting 40th and 48th respectively.
